The Hudson River School Art Trail is a theme trail linking the home of Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School, with the nearby home of his student Frederic Church, as well as nearby painting sites that inspired the work of these and many other Hudson River School artists. The Hudson River School Art Trail seeks to educate the public about the first American art movement, now known as the Hudson River School and its influence on the nation's understanding and appreciation of its natural environment. The painting sites are within 15 miles of the two anchor sites. Some sites are accessible from public roads, while others are only accessible by backcountry trails. Views from many of the painting sites, even those along public roads, remain remarkably unchanged, even today. The trail is currently comprised of seven sites (as of 2005). The inclusion of additional sites, involving additional partners, is planned.

Great concept, some sites need better parking and signs
This is not a trail so much as a collection of sites which inspired famous 19th Century landscape paintings. Wonderful concept. The sites I drove to in the Catskills area, however, did not all have parking and/or were not at the exact GPS coordinates the Hudson River Art School website provides. Better to use the links for each specific site (listed on the Art School’s website) to find exact location instead of using the “we recommend Google Maps” GPS coordinates. If you look at each site’s website then you should have all the info you need to find the correct spots. Some sites require a bit of hiking. The ones I visited did not have any signs by them indicating the area was part of the Hudson River Art School Trail. Moral of the story is you will need to utilize both the art school’s website and the links to each individual site (provided within the art school’s website) to successfully find the right viewing areas. Don’t rely only on the given GPS coordinates. And parking may or may not be a challenge depending on the site. My experiences pertain to the locations within the Catskills area.
